What Is the Malta Car Registration Tax Calculator?
Registration tax is a vehicle-registration cost rather than an annual road-licence payment. For supported M1 vehicles, the estimate uses the official registration value together with emissions and vehicle length.
The result includes:
- CO₂ tax component
- Length tax component
- CO₂ value used
- CO₂ rate used
- Length rate used
- Registration value used
- Estimated M1 registration tax
The official registration value is not necessarily the purchase price or current resale price. It is the value used as the basis for calculating registration tax.
Users reviewing recurring annual vehicle costs should use the Car License Malta Calculator separately. Registration tax and annual circulation licence fees should not be treated as the same charge.
Information Required by the Calculator
First, select the M1 vehicle powertrain. The screenshot uses petrol.
Enter the official Registration Value, shown as RV. This value should come from the relevant official vehicle-valuation process rather than a personal estimate of market value.
Select the CO₂ measurement system, such as WLTP, and enter the official emissions figure in grams per kilometre.
Add the vehicle’s length in millimetres. Use an official specification because even a small difference may affect the calculated length component.
Finally, select any official CO₂ adjustment that genuinely applies. Choose “None” when no supported adjustment should be used.
Select Calculate to display the tax components or Reset to clear the fields.
Formula Used for M1 Registration Tax
The calculator estimates two separate amounts.
CO₂ tax component:
CO₂ value × Registration value × Applicable CO₂ rate
Length tax component:
Vehicle length × Registration value × Applicable precise length rate
The total is then:
Estimated registration tax = CO₂ component + Length component
The percentage displayed in a result card may be rounded for readability. The calculator can retain greater precision internally when calculating the final component.
Step-by-Step Example Using the Displayed Values
The screenshot contains these inputs:
- M1 vehicle powertrain: Petrol
- Official registration value: €20,000
- CO₂ measurement system: WLTP
- Official CO₂ emissions: 120 g/km
- Vehicle length: 4,300 mm
- Official CO₂ adjustment: None
Step 1: Confirm the Registration Value
The calculator uses:
Registration value = €20,000
This is the value against which both the emissions and length components are calculated.
The registration value should not be replaced automatically with the vehicle’s invoice price. Official valuation rules and vehicle details can produce a different value.
Step 2: Calculate the CO₂ Component
The screenshot displays a CO₂ rate of 0.040%.
Convert that percentage into decimal form:
0.040% ÷ 100 = 0.0004
Now multiply the CO₂ value, registration value and rate:
120 × €20,000 × 0.0004 = €960
The displayed CO₂ tax component is therefore €960.00.
Step 3: Calculate the Length Component
The vehicle length is 4,300 mm. The result card displays the length rate rounded to 0.003%.
The displayed component of €2,408 corresponds to an underlying precise rate of 0.0028%:
0.0028% ÷ 100 = 0.000028
Apply that precise rate:
4,300 × €20,000 × 0.000028 = €2,408
The length tax component is therefore €2,408.00.
Using the rounded display rate of 0.003% would produce a different amount. This illustrates why calculations should use the calculator’s underlying precise rate rather than reconstructing the result from a rounded card value alone.
Step 4: Add Both Tax Components
Add the CO₂ and length components:
€960 + €2,408 = €3,368
The estimated M1 registration tax displayed by the calculator is €3,368.00.
Step 5: Check for an Official CO₂ Adjustment
The selected adjustment is “None,” so the calculator uses the entered 120 g/km value without an additional supported adjustment.
Users should not apply an adjustment simply to reduce the estimate. Any adjustment must match the vehicle’s official circumstances and documentation.
Registration Tax Versus Annual Road Licence
Registration tax is generally connected with registering a vehicle. The road licence is a recurring annual amount calculated under separate circulation-fee rules.
The Road Licence Calculator Malta can be used to estimate that annual fee using vehicle age, emissions table, powertrain and other relevant details.
A buyer planning to import or register a vehicle may therefore need to consider both costs, but each should be calculated independently.
Insurance Is Also Separate
The €3,368 estimate does not include vehicle insurance. Insurance is determined by a provider using policy and driver information that is not included in this calculator.
Premiums may depend on:
- Vehicle value and specification
- Driver age and experience
- Claims history
- Type of policy cover
- Policy excess
- Intended vehicle use
- Insurer underwriting rules
Use the Malta Car Insurance Calculator to plan an insurance estimate separately from registration tax.
Additional Malta-focused tools for vehicles, tax, insurance and household planning are available through Malta Calculators.
Why the Official Tax May Differ
The result depends on the accuracy of the official registration value, vehicle length, emissions measurement system and CO₂ figure.
The final assessment may also consider:
- Vehicle age and depreciation
- Mileage adjustments
- Minimum tax rules
- Vehicle inspection findings
- Import origin
- Powertrain-specific treatment
- Exemptions
- Case-specific documentation
- Additional registration charges
The calculator does not include inspection fees, number plates, annual licence fees, VAT, customs charges or every administrative expense that might arise during vehicle registration.
Transport Malta’s official valuation and assessment take priority over this independent estimate.
Before Using the Result
Confirm the registration value through the appropriate official vehicle-valuation service. Check the CO₂ figure, measurement standard and vehicle length against official documentation.
Do not copy information from a similar model because trim, engine, body length and emissions can differ.
The 2026 registration policy, tax factors and procedures can be reviewed through Transport Malta.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q:1 Is registration value the same as the purchase price?
A: Not necessarily. It is the official value used as the basis for calculating vehicle registration tax.
Q:2 How is the €960 CO₂ component calculated?
A: Multiply 120 g/km by €20,000 and the applicable 0.040% rate.
Q:3 Why does the length calculation use 0.0028%?
A: The result card rounds the rate to 0.003%, while the displayed €2,408 component reflects the more precise underlying rate.
Q:4 Does the €3,368 estimate include road licence fees?
A: No. The annual circulation licence is a separate recurring cost.
Q:5 Does the result include car insurance?
A: No. Insurance premiums must be estimated separately.
Q:6 Is the calculator result an official tax assessment?
A: No. Official valuation, inspection and Transport Malta records determine the payable amount.
