What Is the Pension Calculator Malta?
The calculator helps users explore whether their current savings plan may support a desired monthly income during retirement.
Its result section displays:
- Years until retirement
- Total amount contributed
- Investment growth
- Projected fund at retirement
- Fund value in today’s money
- Nominal monthly payout
- Projected monthly pension in today’s money
- Monthly pension target
- Monthly target gap
These results allow you to separate money personally contributed from growth generated by the selected return assumption.
People reviewing the end of an employment period can use the Malta Notice Calculator separately. A notice end date does not establish pension eligibility or a retirement commencement date.
Information Required by the Calculator
Enter your current age and planned retirement age. The planned retirement age must be greater than your current age.
Add the value of any existing retirement savings. This should include only the private savings or investment balance you want the calculator to project.
Enter the amount you plan to contribute each month.
Next, provide an expected annual investment return. This is an assumption rather than a guaranteed rate.
Enter an expected annual inflation rate so that the future fund and payout can also be expressed in today’s purchasing power.
Choose the number of years over which you plan to draw the projected fund. Finally, enter your desired monthly pension in today’s money.
Select Calculate to display the projection or Reset to clear the entered information.
Step-by-Step Example Using the Displayed Values
The screenshot contains these inputs:
- Current age: 30
- Planned retirement age: 65
- Existing retirement savings: €10,000
- Monthly contribution: €250
- Expected annual investment return: 4.50%
- Expected annual inflation: 2%
- Planned pension payout period: 20 years
- Desired monthly pension in today’s money: €1,800
The calculator displays:
- Years until retirement: 35
- Total amount contributed: €115,000
- Investment growth: €181,165.86
- Projected fund at retirement: €296,165.86
- Fund value in today’s money: €148,091.11
- Nominal monthly payout: €1,234.02
- Monthly pension in today’s money: €617.05
- Monthly target gap: €1,182.95
Step 1: Calculate the Years Until Retirement
Subtract the current age from the planned retirement age:
65 − 30 = 35 years
The calculator therefore displays:
Years until retirement = 35
This represents 420 monthly contribution periods:
35 × 12 = 420 months
A longer saving period gives existing savings and new contributions more time to potentially grow.
Step 2: Calculate Total Personal Contributions
The existing retirement savings are:
€10,000
The planned monthly contribution is €250 for 420 months:
€250 × 420 = €105,000
Add the existing balance:
€10,000 + €105,000 = €115,000
The calculator displays:
Total amount contributed = €115,000.00
This figure does not include investment growth. It represents the starting savings and planned contributions supplied by the user.
Step 3: Apply the Expected Investment Return
The calculator projects the €10,000 starting balance and each monthly contribution using the selected annual return of 4.50%.
Because contributions are added over time, every €250 payment does not receive 35 complete years of growth. Earlier contributions have more time to compound than contributions made shortly before retirement.
The calculator displays:
Projected fund at retirement = €296,165.86
Subtract the total personally contributed:
€296,165.86 − €115,000 = €181,165.86
The projected investment growth is therefore:
€181,165.86
This growth is not guaranteed. Actual investment performance may be higher, lower or negative, and fees or taxes may reduce the final balance.
Step 4: Adjust the Fund for Inflation
The future value of €296,165.86 will not necessarily have the same purchasing power as that amount today.
The screenshot uses annual inflation of 2% for 35 years. The calculator discounts the projected fund to express it in today’s money.
The displayed real value is:
Fund value in today’s money = €148,091.11
This means that the projected €296,165.86 fund may have purchasing power comparable to approximately €148,091.11 today under the constant 2% inflation assumption.
Inflation will not remain exactly 2% every year. This field is a long-term planning assumption.
Step 5: Calculate the Nominal Monthly Payout
The planned pension payout period is 20 years:
20 × 12 = 240 months
Divide the projected nominal fund by 240:
€296,165.86 ÷ 240 = €1,234.0244
Rounded to two decimal places:
Nominal monthly payout = €1,234.02
This simple payout projection spreads the fund across the selected period. It does not guarantee that the fund will earn the same return after retirement.
It also does not model provider charges, taxes, withdrawals at different times or unexpected expenses.
Step 6: Calculate the Monthly Pension in Today’s Money
Divide the inflation-adjusted fund by the same 240-month payout period:
€148,091.11 ÷ 240 = €617.0463
Rounded to two decimal places:
Projected monthly pension in today’s money = €617.05
This is the main headline result because it can be compared directly with the desired monthly pension, which is also entered in today’s money.
Step 7: Calculate the Monthly Target Gap
The desired monthly pension is:
€1,800.00
Subtract the projected monthly amount in today’s money:
€1,800 − €617.05 = €1,182.95
The calculator therefore displays:
Monthly target gap = €1,182.95
A positive gap means the projected private savings payout is below the selected target.
The result does not automatically mean the user’s complete retirement income will be €617.05. Other income, including a statutory pension, workplace arrangements or separate investments, is not included unless represented in the entered private savings.
How to Explore Different Scenarios
You can test how the projection changes by adjusting:
- Monthly contribution
- Planned retirement age
- Expected investment return
- Inflation assumption
- Pension payout period
- Desired monthly pension
Increasing the contribution or delaying retirement may increase the projected fund. Reducing the assumed investment return provides a more cautious scenario.
Avoid selecting a high return simply to remove the target gap. Higher potential returns usually involve greater investment risk.
Private Savings Versus Malta’s Statutory Pension
This calculator projects a private retirement fund. Malta’s contributory retirement pension is assessed using Social Security contributions, pensionable income, birth year and other statutory rules.
The Notice Period Calculator Malta may help estimate when employment notice ends, but it does not calculate pension contributions or entitlement.
For an unofficial benefit projection or information about contributory pension assessments, use the official Social Security resources.
